Fougner competed for the University of Victoria where she was named to the Inter-University Athletic Unions All-Canadian team four times. At the age of 18, she was selected to join Canada's national volleyball team shortly after she re-located to the national training centre in Ottawa, she represented her nation in the 1982 World Volleyball championships in Peru. Fougner was a member of the BC championship teams and was a member of the BC volleyball team for four years. Her teenage years were divided busily between softball and volleyball.
